Properly Caring For Color-Treated Hair

Beautiful Woman Luxury MakeupHighlights and dyes can really damage your hair, particularly if you don’t know how to properly maintain it. Check out our stylists’ hair color  tips to keep your strands looking vibrant and strong:

Always use products specifically designed for color-treated hair. You should only use color-safe products as they are the ones with the technology to help you protect your color and keep it vibrant and fresh.

After you color your hair, it is best to wait two or three days before shampooing to allow the color to be absorbed completely. If you can take it, wait for a couple of few days before you shampoo your newly colored hair. If you must really wash it, then just use conditioner to give extra moisture without stripping the color.

Be extra gentle with color-treated hair. Coloring weakens hair, making it more prone to breakage. Choose your hair accessories well. Only use covered elastics to tie it back and brush it with a natural bristle brush when it’s dry. Do not comb your hair when it’s wet as it is in its weakest state.

Never go swimming without protection. Before swimming in a pool or the ocean, make sure to apply a leave-in conditioner on damp hair to prevent the chemicals and salt from stripping your new hair color.

Protect your hair from the sun. Regardless of the season, spend a long day in the sun requires extra protection for your hair. Protect color-treated hair from exposure to UV light to make your hair color last. UV light damages hair and it will cause the dye molecules to oxidize and fade. You can wear a hat or consider applying sunscreen to your hair. Be aware, however, that sunscreens have not been thoroughly researched to determine how they work on hair.

Keep your hair dry in the shower if it’s not your shampoo day. During those off days, wear a shower cap to keep your color-treated hair from getting wet. Wetting your hair without using proper hair care products can cause some color to fade. Use a shower cap or pull your hair up into a loose bun.

Turn down water temperature when shampooing. When you shampoo, the best water temperature is lukewarm or even cooler. Super-hot water strips the color because it opens the surface of the hair strand, which causes the dye molecules to escape.

Condition your hair daily. Color-treated hair needs extra moisture to keep it soft and smooth. So never forget to moisturize your colored hair to maintain its vibrant look.

Have your stylist use only quality hair coloring products. Ask your hair coloring expert to use a hair color product with conditioning properties. Professional hair stylists know how to keep your colored hair looking shiny and healthy.
